2018 brought some fun destinations for me, with an amazing trip to Peru and Europe! And 2019 isn't looking too bad with new adventures already scheduled and booked.
But for today's #TravelTip Thursday, I'd like to talk about a piece of equipment that was given to me last Christmas as a gift—this is something that can benefit you and your family. If you travel local or not, it's something very useful for making homemade healthy travel snacks for on-the-go, hiking, or just relaxing at home.
Reviewing the Nesco Food & Jerkey Dehydrator
The dehydrator itself is a good size and the round shape does not take a lot of space on my kitchen counter. You can adjust the settings marked on the top of the dehydrator lid—depending if you're going to do fruits, veggies, or meat for jerky. ......Yes, you can make your own jerky too!
The model I have (Nesco FD-75A model) comes with:
That's right, you can also make your very own (and healthy) Fruit Roll Ups (* I add a little bit of Stella Rosa wine for sanity)
So how does this relate to a #TravelTip?
We all know that one doesn't need to travel far to find the joys in life. A simple and local road trip or hike can be adventurous! With a handy food dehydrator, anyone can prepare and make snacks for on-the-go and have them handy at all times. You'll be surprised that dehydrated food will still keep it's nutrients and flavor when properly stored and will last for months (if not years).
This in turn makes it a great way to travel light without worrying if your fruit will spoil while you're out backpacking. Though it is recommended to store your dehydrated goods in air tight containers—throw a handful of banana chips or strawberries in a ziplock bag and enjoy.
Dehydrating veggies too make perfect companions to any broth when you're out camping, and lets not forget the varies ways you can marinate and make your own jerkey!
The fan on this particular Nesco Dehydrator is located on top, so the air flow will circulate evenly, just keep in mind that time varies on how long it takes for the dehydrating process, but be prepared to wait at least 12+ hours. I've been using my dehydrator for three days now and am comfortable leaving it on while I'm away from home. The entire unit will not over heat and is made and built to leave on for that long period of time.. (I will keep you posted if it pulls a lot of electricity when I get my bill).
So far, I've enjoyed dehydrating (and eating) Banana chips, Strawberries and Apples (with cinnamon). I have yet to try pineapple, watermelon and that homemade Jerkey, and even soups.
Overall, I give the Nesco Food and Jerky Dehydrator a 10 out of 10! This is ideal for many healthy benefits and great for everyone in the family—kids can have fun making their own homemade healthy snacks too! Fruit Roll Ups with natural ingredients without the added sugar
Being a fan of acai bowls, my favorite fruit roll up to make is an Acai one (keep an eye out on my blog as I share my acai fruit roll up recipe)
